GoPro 360 Degree Swivel Mount For Selfie Sticks
A recent camping trip alongside an ancient river was the ideal opportunity to test my new GoPro 360 degree swivel mount and record some dynamic video shots.
The set up I used was very simple, a selfie stick with the 360 degree swivel mount attached via a GoPro tripod adapter.
The 360 swivel mount really does open up the variety of video shots you can record. Read on to find out more.
What is a 360 degree Swivel Mount
The ball joint which is integral to the mount allows 360 rotation of the camera in the horizontal plane, plus 180 degree rotation in the vertical plane.
If you have a look at the diagrams I have provided below it shows you the rotation in both planes that are possible.
Having the ability to rotate the GoPro with such ease makes shooting different camera angles far quicker and easier.
Using A Swivel Mount With A Selfie Stick
Of course a swivel mount can be used with any 3 pronged GoPro adapter. From mountain bike brackets, ski helmet curved mounts, kayaking suction cups and so on.
For my own personal setup I use an Insta360 1.2 metre selfie stick, a basic tripod adapter that screws onto the ¼ -20 UNC thread of the selfie stick.
And finally the swivel mount itself that slots into the 3 prongs of the tripod mount. I’ve taken a picture of the 3 components so you can clearly see what I mean.
Choice of Selfie Stick
Just a quick mention in regards to the Insta360 selfie stick. The reason I use this selfie stick and not an official GoPro stick is that I prefer it.
Reason being I find it more comfortable to hold, it’s rigid when fully extended and it works with my GoPro Max very nicely when filming 360 VR footage.
Swivel Mount With Selfie Stick Tips
Now as you may remember I spent time by a river on a recent camping trip. I wanted to film some shots over the river bank without getting into the actual river itself.
How could I achieve this I thought? Then the idea of using a swivel mount attached to a long selfie stick was the solution.
I know I could have used a drone for this type of shot but I wanted to see if using a Gopro to record a drone style shot would work, and it did.
Ok, I was “Ninja walking” and recording at 120 fps which I slowed down in the edit so I could get some buttery smooth footage, but it would be hard to tell it wasn’t shot with a drone to most people.
I’ve created a basic illustration of me walking along the bank of the river (See below) and you can see the camera is hovering above the river. This was possible as I could swivel the camera at 90 degrees to the selfie stick.
Final Thoughts
I have to say, the swivel mount has become my favorite action camera accessory. It’s low cost, takes up very little room in my backpack or EDC pouch and provides so many extra camera angles.
I’ve opted for the AxPower 360 Degree Swivel Arm as it’s called. The mount is very well made from premium quality aluminum alloy using precision CNC machines, plus an anti-corrosion coating.
The mount comes with an additional thumb screw, plus a small wrench to tighten the screws.
I hope you’ve found this article useful and it’s given you some inspiration to add more variety and experiment with camera angles with your own GoPro or action camera.
