WiFi Trail Cameras Compared - Updated (October 2022)

A feature that is becoming more popular with trail camera users is WiFi. Here I take a look at 3 WiFi trail cameras in the comparison guide.

These cameras all operate over a WiFI signal that connects to your smartphone. The range of the connection in optimal conditions is around 50 to 60 feet. The cameras do not send images via a cellular network.

Fast Navigation

If you’re looking for a cellular trail camera, take a look at this article on some of the latest cameras available.

If you’d like more information on the different types of wireless trail cameras it may be worth a read of my article on the subject.

Accessories

All 3 of the cameras in this comparison come with the following accessories. Which means all you’ll need to get started is a set of 8 x AA batteries, plus an SD card.

  • Nylon tree strap
  • Metal swivel mount and fixings,
  • Micro USB cable.
  • Watch style WiFi ON / OFF remote.

This is the first WiFi trail camera offering from the company UsoGood and it has to be said, they have done a very good job overall.

Looking at the specifications the standout feature is the IR emitters. IR stands for Infrared which enables the camera to record black and white images at night.

Compared to the other cameras the UsoGood has invisible 940nm LED emitters. In practice this means the IR flash range is further allowing the camera to record movement during darkness at greater distances.

This is ideal for setups on the edge of fields such as covering a food plot or maybe a longer trail in wooded areas.

Performance

The detection circuit for this camera is impressive overall. A 0.2 second trigger speed, the speed at which the camera will react to movement and start recording is about as fast as you’ll see on a camera in this budget range.

The wide detection zone at 120 degrees is also a welcome feature. This also makes the camera a good option for covering larger areas such as fields.

Picture Quality

Video is recorded at 1296 HD resolution which is great to see, as opposed to 1080p you find on most current trail cameras. Daytime video quality is very good overall but make sure you point the camera facing north to get the best results.

Night images are good overall. The still images are better than the video with less noise but overall the UsoGood performs well. I’d suggest covering some of the IR sensors over with tape if you plan on using the camera for more close up detections to avoid overbright images at night.

The XTU is very similar in many ways to the UsoGood camera we looked at earlier with the exception of the IR emitters being 850nm compared to 940nm on the UsoGood.

Trigger speed is slower as well at 0.4 seconds which in real world environments makes very little difference.

Video resolution is 1296P and still images are captured at 24MP albeit with some interpolation as with all trail cameras it has to be said.

Like all the cameras here the Vanbar has its 2 inch color LCD screen located at the rear of the camera housing facia. This means while setting up you get a real time view of what the camera lens is pointing at.

WiFi performance like with all the cameras works well up to distances of around 50 feet. But larger video files do take a while to download to your smartphone.

The XTU just falls short in my view compared to the UsoGood trail camera but there is very little to separate them to be honest.

Out of the 3 cameras in this comparison the TopVision [1] is the only trail camera here to record video at 4k resolution. Please note that this is not native 4k as there is some interpolation used by the camera’s processors to achieve this resolution.

Having said that, the quality of the images on this camera are very good indeed, especially during daylight hours.

I would have liked to have seen a longer detection range to go with the increased resolution but you would have to pay a lot more on say, a Browning 4k camera to have the extra range.

As with all the cameras here, the batteries are housed in a pop out tray directly underneath the camera’s shell. I personally prefer this type of setup compared to having the batteries stored in the swing door.

Out of the 3 cameras here the TopVision has a larger LCD screen at 2.4 inches making it slightly easier to operate the menu options.
