How To Put GPS Stickers On GoPro Footage

The introduction of GPS overlays or stickers as they’re now known arrived with the Hero 5 Black GoPro camera.

We are now well over 4 years since this some would say underused feature arrived in the world of action cameras.

The stickers as we’ll call them are overlaid using the official Gopro app, downloadable for free. I’ve used the iOS app for this demonstration but it really is almost exactly the same across both Apple and Android devices.

Video Recorded With GPS Data

To start off with your going to need a video clip with GPS data embedded into the file. To record a video file with the GPS metadata, GPS will need switching to “ON” in the preferences settings in camera.

The GPS ON / OFF option can be found under the Regional Menu. Once you’ve switched the GPS on it may take up to a minute to locate a satellite.

To ensure the camera has connected to a satellite, hold the camera face up towards the sky.

A lock on to a satellite is denoted by the icon being full white. This icon is greyed out when there is no GPS satellite connection. I’ve drawn an orange circle around the icon to highlight it.

Import Video Into The App

Import all your GPS enabled video footage directly into the Gopro app. You can do this by connecting the GoPro to your device via WiFi.

You can simply remove the SD card from the camera and use an SD card reader to plug into your smartphone or iPad / tablet port.

Now you have all the video files imported access the media library via the blue icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

With the media library selected you now have a thumbnail list of all the video files imported into the GoPro App.

Adding Stickers To Video Footage

Select the video file you want to work with, followed by tapping the pencil icon below. The pencil icon (shown on the far left) opens up all the editing options for the chosen clip.

Take a look at the image below and on the far right of all the options is the stickers icon. Tap this icon to access the GPS overlay menu options.

GPS Sticker Options

As you can see from the screen grab taken from within the App there are 7 types of GPS telemetry to choose from. Simply tap one of the 7 sticker icons you wish to overlay onto your video footage and it will appear in the top left corner. Tap the same sticker icon again and it will move to the opposite corner.

4 taps of the same icon will move the sticker overlay to the final postion at the bottom left corner of the screen. A 5th tap will remove the sticker completely.

It sounds complicated but as soon as you have a play around a bit it becomes easy to customize according to how you wish to display the GPS data.

When your happy with the layout just tap the tick icon at the bottom right of the screen and the video file with the new GPS overlay data display is saved into the media library.
