How To Edit GoPro Max 360 VR Footage On iPad
In this tutorial I detail step by step on how to edit GoPro Max 360 VR video footage using an iPad. You can of course use an iPhone too if you have a later model phone.
360 VR video allows the viewer to scroll the camera view 360 degrees using either their fingers, a VR headset or simply by rotating and tilting their tablet or smartphone.
Just to be clear, we will be working with 360 VR video files. This is not a tutorial on how to reframe 360 video using keyframes to produce a flat video. I will cover reframing in a further tutorial.
The tutorial shows how to import 360 files into the Quik app, trimming and exporting a single clip to share on social media or save to the iPads Photo album.
I also talk about how I combine multiple 360 clips into a single combined edited video using the LumaFusion video editing app.
Importing GoPro Max 360 Footage To iPad
- Insert the SD card containing the 360 footage into the Max’s SD card slot.
- Ensure the iPads Bluetooth is switched to ON.
- Power the GoPro Max to ON.
- Open the GoPro Quik app on the iPad.
- Tap the camera icon in the very top right of the apps screen.
- An option to Join the Max Wifi will appear, select Join.
- You now have the option of either controlling the Max via the app or view media stored on the camera’s SD card.
- Tap the “tick box” icon in the top right corner to select the 360 files that you wish to work with.
9. Selected files will have a blue border, you can select and deselect files until you’re ready to download the 360 files to the ipad internal storage.
10. With the files selected, tap the download icon at the centre of the icon bar, found at the bottom of the apps screen. A progress bar will appear, indicating the time to download the files.
11. An option to view all the files downloaded to the app will appear. Tap this option to view the recently downloaded 360 video files.
You now have thumbnails of all the files downloaded to the app displayed on screen.
Trimming The 360 Video Files
- Select a file that you would like to edit using the quik app by tapping on the thumbnail in the library.
- The previous action opens the 360 video file full screen width inside the app.
- In the centre of the video file you will see a blue 360 icon. Tap this icon to open the editing features.
- At the bottom of the editing screen you will see 4 icons. For this tutorial we are only going to trim the 360 VR clip ready for exporting to the iPads internal storage.
- To trim the clip, select the scissor icon on the far left.
- You will now see a trim bar with a second counter.
- Drag the trim bar to the position you would like the footage to start.
- Tap the scissor icon at this point.
- Move the trim bar forward and tap the out point for your footage.
- You can adjust the IN & OUT points for the footage by grabbing the trim handles at each end until you’re completely happy with the selected clip.
- Press Play to view the clip selected between the IN & OUT points.
- Finally, ensure Horizon Levelling is switched ON by tapping the icon in the top left of the app screen.
- Repeat the steps 1 – 12 in this section for each of the clips that you would like to use as part of a multi clip 360 VR final video.
Export The Edited 360 VR File
With the 360 VR clip trimmed, select the export option at the top right of the screen. This will now ask whether you would like to Save to Photos or Share Media. Select the former.
Using the Share Media option, single clips can be shared to Youtube or Facebook once you have given the GoPro Quik app permission to log into these social media platforms.
If you would like to use multiple 360 clips combining the clips into a single edited video then you will need to use a 3rd party editing app that supports 360 VR. Read on to find out how to achieve this.
Remember that support for 360 media is limited in some apps and devices.
A download progress bar will appear indicating how long the export to the iPads photo library will take, until the status is shown as complete.
Close this window and quit out of the GoPro Quik app. The next stage is to import the trimmed 360 files into the LumaFusion video editing app.
Editing 360 VR Video Using LumaFusion
For those who are new to video editing on their iOS device LumaFusion is one of the leading apps for video. I’m now going to provide an overview on how to combine multiple 360 VR clips onto one timeline inside the app.
I have used the app since I purchased an iPad Pro for all my video editing, as an alternative to my MacBook Pro. With the release of version 3.0 the app now has functionality to match some of the desktop video editing powerhouses.
LumaFusion is a paid app, in my opinion it is well worth the one off fee if you plan on using your iOS device for editing video for all types of social media platforms and end user experiences.
Anyone familiar with video editing software will be at home with the LumaFusion interface. The clip window displays all your video clips stored in photos on the iPad. It’s just a matter of dragging the clips to either the timeline or trim window.
With all the 360 VR clips previously trimmed in the GoPro Quik app placed onto the LumaFusion timeline it’s time to export the clips as a single consolidated file or to a social media platform.
