How To Tether GoPro Hero Black 8,9 & 10
When the GoPro Hero 8 launched we welcomed the new folding fingers mounting system to the GoPro ecosystem. The fingers suddenly made it a whole lot easier on how to tether GoPro cameras for added security.
I’m going to share with you a quick, simple, low cost and most importantly a very secure way to ensure your GoPro doesn’t disappear out of sight permanently.
This method as mentioned will only work with the Hero 8,9 and the Hero 10, or put simply any model with folding fingers.

Tether Size & Type
Over the years I’ve used various methods of securing a safety line to a GoPro mount. Usually involving paracord and tying a hitch knot for adjustability. Times have moved on fortunately and my current setup is quicker and more secure.
Stainless Steel Tethers
You can source a set of plastic coated stainless steel tethers from a number of sources online. The tethers I use are also salt resistant, handy for the sea kayak and surfers amongst us.
The set comes with 4 different lengths of tether, plus several small carabiners to clip onto a daysack or life jacket for example.
Attaching The Tethers
To attach one of the tethers, take one of the loop ends and gently push over one of the folding fingers. You will find the loop is quite a snug fit, carefully press the loop all the way down to the base of the finger.
Now that the tether is securely in place on one of the folding fingers. It’s just a matter of sliding the fingers between the 3 prongs of any universal GoPro mount and inserting the thumbscrew, followed by tightening the screw.
Alternative Tether Mounting
I have shared with you what I think is the quickest and arguably most secure way of tethering a GoPRo camera to your person.
There is some debate as to whether the folding fingers would shear off under extreme force, thus it would be better to slide the tether onto the thumbscrew as it passes through the 3 prongs of the universal mount.
I haven’t scientifically tested this method and there may be some validity to this argument. However, what I do know is that in real world situations my preferred method is not going to fail.
Carabiners
A quick mention about carabiners. As shown in the picture, I’ve gone for a large style carabiner to attach to a daysack or life vest. Simply because it’s easier to clip onto and off, especially when your hands are cold or you are wearing gloves.
Final Thoughts
So there you have it. A quick and easy way to make sure your GoPro always stays with you when you’re out adventuring, whether that be dirt biking, kayaking, skiing or so on.
I always carry at least a couple of tethers as part of my GoPro EDC carry, inside a small pouch.
Drop me a comment if you have any other tips or ideas on the subject of tethering a safety line to a GoPro, I love to hear from you.
