Paracord bracelets have become a popular fashion accessory in recent years and there are many different designs and types to choose from.

They essentially all carry out the same basic practical task of helping you in a survival situation.

Here I take a look at some of the ways in which a paracord bracelet can be used and the different types and styles on offer.

Basic paracord bracelet

A basic paracord bracelet is essentially just a piece of paracord woven together to fit the wrist with a quick release buckle at either end clipping it together. My choice for a basic bracelet is the The X-Plore Paracord bracelet seen below which also has a small compass too.

Paracord, as the name suggests comes from a parachute. They are the many cords that suspend a person from the chute itself. So it’s incredibly strong.

There are 6 different ratings or strengths of paracord, but most bracelets are made using what is called 550 cord which means it will hold a static weight of upto 550 lbs, which is more than enough to carry out most basic survival skills.

I’m not going to go into the science of paracord here. Jump over to this fantastic website and check out all the “nitty gritty” on paracord if you would like some more detailed information.

Basic paracord uses

These are pretty much the most common uses for a basic paracord bracelet. I’m sure some more inventive folk out there have done some other super useful stuff with theirs, but these are the most common uses.

  • Snare trap
  • Bow drill
  • Fishing net
  • Shelter
  • Fishing line

Snare trap

I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of snare traps, but if I was in a situation where I needed to eat to stay alive then of course I would resort to using one.

I’m not going to go into the mechanics of snare building as there are other websites out there that offer plenty of advice and tips, but it’s sure to say, a length of paracord used in a correctly positioned and built snare will have a chance of putting food in the belly when it’s really needed.

Bow drill for fire making

Most of us have made a bow drill when we were younger to see if we could make a ember to get a fire going. If you have the you know it takes a lot of patience and elbow grease.

In a survival situation where all you have is the clothes your standing in, and wearing your trusty paracord bracelet, then you’ve got a much greater chance of getting a fire going than without a piece of cord.

Making a fishing net

For the seasoned bushcraft folks, making a fishing net out of paracord is one skill they may learn to help them in a survival situation.

There’s a heap of videos on Youtube showing you how to make a net, so it’s worth checking out if you have the time. I’m sure done correctly and placed in the right river or stream it could make all the difference to staying alive while waiting for rescue.

Making a shelter

Again, paracord is going to be very useful in building a basic structure to shelter from the elements. It can be used to suspend a tarp or binding sticks together to make a structure for supporting branches and leaves.

Paracord bracelet fishing line

The inside of a paracord is made up of 7 to 9 very fine strands that can be carefully picked out from the nylon outer layer.

These very fine strands are not too dissimilar to conventional fishing line. You can also make a fishing lure as well by fraying the ends of the outer nylon layer and placing it on a fishing hook.

OK, so a basic paracord bracelet doesn’t have a fishing hook, unless you’ve concealed one inside the weave. But that takes us into the advanced bracelets which we’ll take a quick look at now.

The Chasing Fin Adjustable Bracelet on Amazon is a beauty as you can see in the image below if your looking for a dedicated fishing bracelet, and it’s a good price too.

Advanced paracord bracelet

There’s no doubt even the basic paracord bracelet does have a number of very useful ways in helping you to survive, just by using the nylon cord.

But the “advanced paracord bracelet” has a whole load of additional features and tools over the basic nylon cord.

There’s a lot of brands of paracord bracelets out there, but talking to a few seasoned bushcrafters and doing a bit of research a few brands always seem to crop up.

The Holtzman’s Gorilla Survival bracelet is one of the most popular. It’s around just under $20 and you get 25 tools and features integrated into the stylish design.

The X-Plore Gear Emergency Paracord Bracelet is another very popular bracelet. It doesn’t have as many features as the Holtzman’s Gorilla, but it does all the essential stuff well.

X-Plore Paracord bracelet features

  • Flint fire starter
  • A whistle that can be heard at great distances
  • Compass for heading in the direction to safety

The X-Plore comes in a range of colors and sizes, so if your looking for a budget, quality paracord bracelet it’s worth considering.

Summary

The world of paracord bracelets is becoming more and more popular. Taking  quick look on Youtube and other websites, there’s a whole following to this small but useful item.

People share information on how to make your own and what types of cord and accessories you can attach to them. Which all seems a good bit of fun. They do have a role to play if you are stuck in a real survival situation.

I know some serious backpacking and hiking guys who clip a paracord bracelet onto their backpacks, as it acts as a very useful backup to traditional tools without adding any noticeable weight to the load.

Some people may say they’re a gimmick, but I’m a fan, as they make people more aware of the outdoors.

Looking at what’s possible with just a paracord bracelet, lets us see more of what nature has to offer.
