You’ll see from the picture above all of my best budget camera gear for hiking laid out onto a table while I was staying in a small cabin during a recent trip to Norway. There is nothing fancy or expensive in the photo in my opinion.

[Scroll down to watch a video I filmed using my camera gear.]

The drone is the most expensive item, sourced off eBay for around $500 with one previous owner. Followed by the DSLR  which again I found on eBay. The rest of the gear I mostly sourced by reading reviews and purchasing from Amazon.

The point is, you don’t need expensive camera equipment these days to get reasonably good results.

The majority of video content is viewed on Youtube or similar social media and is therefore heavily compressed.

I just don’t see the point in shooting on expensive gear unless it’s going to appear on a large projected screen or transmitted for broadcast TV. 99.9% of people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference anyway while viewing video on social media.

The other big plus is speed. I haven’t got time to assemble a full frame camera with all it’s extras and then spend  3 hours getting 2 shots. As I say, save that for big production work.

The equipment listed below is some of my more interesting bits of camera gear. Hopefully you’ll find the list useful and maybe some of the kit will allow you to record better video footage to share on your own social platforms.

I do receive a small commission from the sales of the gear below which will buy me a much appreciated small coffee.

Drone Accessories For DJI Spark

PolarPro Vivid Collection 3-Pack

After reading about how to get the best footage from the Spark it became apparent that a set of neutral density filters were needed.

PolarPro are arguably the best and they’re not too expensive. They act as sunglasses for the camera lens allowing a more natural looking video due to better frame rates giving added motion blur.

DJI SPARK FLY MORE COMBO

I opted for the DJI Spark [1] simply because I liked the look of the footage on Youtube.

Although it only has a 2 axis gimbal, I’ve found the footage to be rock steady. Keep an eye out for wind speed though.

I tend to only fly on almost perfectly still days, but you can fly in up to 20 mph winds.

Data Cable for DJI Spark Remote Controller

A simple cable that connects your phone to the controller.

This ensures there is no loss of connection between your phone and the controller. Many people have lost their drone due to a break in connection. Make sure it’s compatible with your phone’s socket.

Action Camera Accessories Kit

QKOO ND Filter Kit

ND filters fitted to an action camera allow you use double the shutter speed to frame rate.

This makes for a more natural video image due to added motion blur. It also makes for a better picture in very bright sunlight overall.

Go Pro Hero 7 Black

The Hero 7 Black has all the frame rates and time-lapse options I need for making videos to share on Youtube.

I shoot most my video using the Go Pro and generally I’ve found it to be excellent. Just don’t expect shallow depth of field, you’ll need a DSLR for that type of shot. Although SDOF is a bit overdone these days.

Go Pro Accessories

This kit comes with almost everything you’ll ever need.

The only negative I found with the kit is the mini tripod snapped with not much use. So I’d suggest a better flexi tripod to add to the kit.

Action Camera Gimbals

Feiyu Tech FY-WG2

This is one of the pieces of kit that I haven’t used too much, mainly because I love using the Hohem gimbal

It is wearable though so it will come in handy for when I start the ski season. The only minus point I have with this gimbal at present is the battery life. At most I’ve been able to get about 2 hours from a single charge.

If your looking for a budget wearable gimbal though it’s certainly worth a look.

Hohem isteady Pro Gimbal

At first, to be honest I could not get on with this thing at all. Perhaps because it was the first gimbal I’ve used. However after a fair amount of practice it clicked into place on how to get super smooth pictures.

Now I love the thing and it’s used almost daily for filming walks and cinematic movements through forests and mountains. See my full review of the Hohem isteady Pro.
