Wimius H7 Trail Camera Review

The brand name Wimius was unheard of to me until I discovered that they make trail cameras.

The company is better known in the  home projectors market so I was fairly sceptical about how one of their trail cameras would perform.

This article is my short review of the Wimius H7 trail camera.

The camera records video at 1080P and still pictures up to 16 megapixels, plus it has a few additonal modes alongside too. So let’s delve straight in and see what this low price point trail camera can offer.

Key Features

Looking at the specification the camera is pretty basic by today’s standards. It has a 0.5 seconds trigger speed and infrared night illumination.

The camera is IP66 waterproof and has a 90 degree angle PIR sensor. So nothing really that jumps out at you on paper.

The body of the camera is the popular clam shell design with 2 latches to the right of the body. Inside you’ll find a small color LCD screen to access the menu functions and a live feed direct from the camera lens.

At the rear of the camera is the battery compartment. This is accessed by unsrewing a plastic knob and then pulling the plastic cover off.

The camera takes 8 x AA batteries. I ran a set of lithium AA batteries for a week and they were still holding up well after that time.

Accessories

The camera comes in a basic grey box. Inside you’ll find a nylon tree strap, a micro USB cable to allow you to connect to a computer, plus a metal swivel mount bracket.

The camera comes with an instruction book written in various languages.

Video Mode

There are 3 modes in total. Video, still picture and video / still picture mode. In video mode there is the option to set the resolution from VGA, 720P to 1080P.

For this review I only tested the highest resolution at 1080P as I find 720P almost obsolete these days.

Video quality at 1080P is average at best it has to be said during the day. There was quite a lot of picture noise on the video clips. Night time video was even worse, however you could still see up to around 30 feet away, which isn’t that far to be honest.

The trigger speed and detection distance was quite impressive. Especially the detection range. I’d say on average the cameras PIR sensor was picking up movement at around 70 feet which is pretty good for a low cost trail cam.

Photo Mode

Photo mode allows you to set the image size from 1 megapixel up to 16 MP. There is a burst mode allowing you to set 1, 2 or 3 pictures to be recorded at a single trigger from the PIR sensor.

I found the pictures at 16 MP to be reasonably good during the day, far better than the video quality. Night time pictures again suffered from a lot of noise, but were acceptable.

Verdict

Our Rating
3.5/5

The Wimius H7 is a basic trail camera that is very easy to set up. For that reason I’d suggest the camera to a beginner or if you have kids wanting to learn about trail cams.

The detection range is quite impressive, its just a shame the video quality is average at best. The still pictures are reasonably good quality during the day.

Overall, the H7 is a basic trail camera only really suited to casual users or people starting out.

If you don’t mind spending a liitle extra to optain better pictures and video I’d suggest looking at these alternative budget trail cameras.
